Experiences as Christmas presents

In this festive season, it is very common to fall into the temptation of focusing on material presents as a way to measure and to demonstrate how much affection we feel for our beloved ones. However, if we look at the internal side, we will find a perspective change that will make the difference.

We always associate the end of the year with the purchase of new items, whether vehicles, clothes or home equipment. We always seek experiences based on symbols, without understanding that the external ends up being momentary, transient and less transcendent, in contrast with other types of experiences that could be «sown» inside.

When we focus on external things, which expire with time, we end up diluting the experience placed in the material object. In this way, we always return to the initial dissatisfaction, which could have motivated us to acquire it. We are left with a feeling of emptiness.

Another issue is the so-called «hyper-rewarded child syndrome». Speaking to the Spanish press, Francesc Nuñez, a professor at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, said this happens when «you give much than necessary and more than a child’s emotion can accept». This causes, among other things, that children «do not appreciate the gifts, lose the illusion and become capricious, selfish and consumerist».

According to a statistical study carried out in 2017 by Deloitte, the most usual reasons given by Latin Americans to justify significant spendings during Christmas were improvements in family economic conditions (42%) or the renewal of personal items such as clothing, footwear, and toys (24%).

Does it make any sense to you wasting money you don’t have, on things you don’t need to impress people who don’t really care about you?

As I say in the conference and MasterClass series «The business of being you», it is possible that some external symbols can become deep internal experiences, for example, studies. The titles and academic achievements could be classified as something external, but they are applicable in our lives if we transform them into learning and wisdom. By this, they will become a transcendent experience that, in addition, capitalizes our investment.

We must be congruent on what we think, feel, say and do. That is the secret of well-being!

I invite you to invest in 2019 in other kinds of gifts for your loved ones and, why not, also for you: give quality time, give full attention coupons to those around you, disconnected from electronic devices for a few hours. You can also leave your comfort zone and give a stranger a smile, or have a kind gesture with someone on the street, for no specific reason. You will be impressed by what you can discover …

Take advantage of these holidays to create new memories and quality experiences with a focus on the inner empire. Your soul will thank you!
